Huge Barra on the lake
A great catchLake Awoonga Fishing Charter
Nestled amongst the backdrop of Mt Castletower and meandering through the upper reaches of the fertile Boyne Valley is the soothing and scenic environment of Lake Awoonga. But this relaxing and soothing tranquility is completely smashed when you hook onto your first monster Barramundi!
Lake Awoonga has earned its reputation as a Barramundi fishing Mecca not just in one year. Lake Awoonga has earned this reputation over a number of years for it has consistently been a big Barramundi producing impoundment. Just to give you an idea, over three million fingerlings have been released in the past 10 years and these fingerling have demonstrated huge growth rates of up to 9lb per year, thanks to Lake Awoonga's picture perfect habitat for Barramundi. This has created a sensational, yet challenging Barramundi impoundment fishery.
The Barramundi is Australia's premier and most iconic sports fish and has anglers here and around the world dreaming of the day when they catch that big one!! And Lake Awoonga is the place where the big ones are caught.
It's estimated that there have been fish hooked here that are over the 80lb mark, but have not been landed. There are stories of even bigger ones that have been sighted cruising the shallows.
Although the size of the biggest monsters is uncertain, what can be confirmed is the numbers and quality of the fish that are caught, landed, have their photo snapped and are then released to fight another day. You certainly won't be short of action in this place!
Monster Barra aside, there are large numbers of Barramundi caught over the 40lb mark, and there's absolutely no doubting that the adrenaline rush of having one of this criters on the end of your line is like nothing else on earth! But there is also really fantastic sport to be had with fish under the 20lb and 10lb mark. These fish are spritely and are superb fun on lighter tackle. They also have the silver hue of their saltwater brothers, so they take a great picture in this scenic fishing paradise too.
Lake Awoonga is a huge body of water, and there would be few if any guides that have caught as many impoundment Barramundi as they do here. The fishing here is good all year round so don't believe all that you read about impoundment Barramundi shutting down for winter. Like all living creatures Barramundi have to eat and when they feed in winter its mayhem!
The fishing here is all catch and release, but that doesn't make the thrill of the chase any less enticing, and there's plenty of time to get a few special pictures of you and your Barramundi.
Lake Awoonga is just a few kilometers from Gladstone and is easily accessible by car. But there's no need for you to work out the details of your trip. FishingEarth can arrange your guides, your accommodation, your transfers and even your flights from any location in the world.
