Kimberley Coastal Camp

Kimberley Coastal Camp is one of the few places on earth where you can enjoy out of this world fishing along with fantastic scenery, gourmet food, superb accommodation and Aboriginal rock art combined with unparalleled hospitality in a truly remote location.

Isolated even by Kimberley standards, the Kimberley Coastal Camp is situated right on the edge of the pristine waters of the Admiralty Gulf in the far north Kimberley region of Western Australia. Getting here is an adventure in itself, as you fly by light aircraft to the famous Mitchell Plateau over a mosaic of mangrove-lined creeks. The final leg of the trip is an exhilarating helicopter transfer to this secluded hideaway.

When it comes to the fishing, the isolation of the location translates into superb fishing. There are huge tidal rivers, mangrove creeks, estuaries, sand flats, off shore reefs and islands to be explored, as well as the blue water. The diversity of the fishing means that your experienced guides can match your itinerary to the tides, so when the fish are on the bite, you're in the right spot. All this fishing is within 15 minutes by boat from the camp.

The waters here are abundant with beautiful silver saltwater Barramundi, many of which in the metre range. You'll also encounter Mangrove Jacks, FingerMark, big Mulloway and Threadfin and Blue Salmon as well as Queenfish. And all this fantastic fishing is within just a few hundred metres of the camp.

As you move into the deeper turquoise waters you have to tighten the drag and grab your more powerful gear. The Giant Trevally love smashing lures and spooling reels and they are never too far away from Spanish Mackerel that will blow you away with their first couple of runs, often taking one or two hundred meters of line each run; and the Tuna are found in numbers smashing up bait schools and offer the fly fisho hours of excitement.

The reefs hold numbers of Coral Trout, Trevally, big Fingermark and Mangrove Jacks, as well as the hard fighting Spanish Mackerel. Each of these fish will have a bend in your rod and adrenalin pumping through your veins.

The choice is yours as to how much fishing you do. You can fish all day every day, stopping for a delicious packed lunch in a shady spot in the river. Or after a morning's fishing you can take your catch ashore on a deserted island fringed with boab trees and have your guide cook it for you 'bush style' on the coals.

The atmosphere at the camp is relaxed and unpretentious. There are no preset itineraries here, and you get to set the pace to be as active or as laid back as you like. This makes Kimberley Coastal Camp a perfect location for couples and groups where not everyone is a mad keen fisho.

For those of you that are here to fish, you can fish from early in the morning through to when the sun sets over the beautiful Admiralty Gulf. And for those who are not quite as keen, there is an excellent choice of non-fishing activities including wildlife treks, Aboriginal rock art tours or simply relaxing on the beautiful beaches and reading a book.

The camp itself sits on a small peninsula, overlooking the waters of the Timor Sea. Scattered amongst the red sandstone and native grasses, spacious guest gazebos offer privacy and comfort. Taking full advantage of the tranquil views over Admiralty Gulf, your room with a view is simple but stylish, featuring a king size double or two single beds, flyscreened walls and a ceiling fan.

Open to the gentle sea breezes, the hub of the Kimberley Coastal Camp is known simply as 'The Shed'. A large, open sided pavilion hand built using recycled timber with high raked ceilings, this is the perfect place to discuss the day's adventures, relax with a book from the library, listen to some great music, or just listen to the waves lapping on the shore.

A large rustic dining table is the scene for those wonderful gourmet meals that Kimberley Coastal Camp is famous for, whether it's wild saltwater Barramundi straight from the ocean, succulent oysters plucked from the rocks, delicious mud crabs taken from the mangrove lined creeks, a hearty barbeque or a simple pizza garnished with rosemary and drizzled with olive oil.

The swimming pool with stunning water views is an ideal place to cool off at the end of the day with an icy drink in hand, prior to the pre dinner snacks that are served at sunset.

To ensure an intimate atmosphere and minimise the impact to the environment, guests are limited to just 12. A stay here is best enjoyed as a five day minimum tour and packages are available from Darwin, Broome, Kununurra or the Mitchell Plateau during the dry season, from April to October.
