Four Days Fly Fishing on Hinchinbrook Island

Hinchinbrook Island sits just off the coast from Cardwell between Cairns and Townsville and is Australia's largest Island national park. This fisherman's Island paradise is covered in tropical rainforest and is surrounded to the east by the open ocean and to its west side by a maze of mangrove lined creeks, sand flats that are home to the fly fishers holy grail Permit. There are also a number of channels that offer a contrast of depth that offer incredible sight fishing with the sun on your back and fly rod in hand.

The Hinchinbrook Channel has become one of the best fly fishing destinations in Australia of the past decade. There is always somewhere to fish out of the wind. The fishing is so incredible that its not uncommon to catch four different species in four cast of the same snag. All this fishing only a short drive from Cairns international/domestic airports. If you need a long weekend away this four day trip is for you.

There are Permit to be hunted on Hinchinbrook's flats along with GT's that are cruising around the edge of the channel drop offs waiting to smash unsuspecting schools of bait or your fly. Move into the creeks and your fly with be in even more danger of being smashed in the snags and creek mouths by Barramundi, Mangrove Jack and Cod waiting to ambush their dinner. In the deeper holes you will have the opportunity to fish for Fingermark and Jewfish. Plus there are also all the usual tropical suspects, such as Bream, Salmon and Queenfish.

One of the best times to fly fish Hinchinbrook is when the water is clear as this gives you the the best opportunity on the flats as well as in the creeks for Barramundi and Jacks. Depending on what you want to catch you can move between the flats and creeks through to the open water and close in reefs. Have you ever thought you would catch a Coral Trout on fly? These reefs offer all the reef species along with the pelagics like Spanish Mackerel and Barracuda.

This fishing will offer you a challenge that you and you guild will spend much of your time talking about. What do you want to catch? Yep its a hard question but one you have to think about. As you could spend the whole four days in the creeks targeting Barramundi, but there is so much more to fishing this area. Pick out a fly and see if you can catch a Barramundi, Trevally, Coral Trout and Spanish Mackerel. This is a real possibility you just have to give it a crack.

You will stay at one of the local hotels where many anglers before you have stayed. If the walls could talk! Your accommodation offers you excellent access to Hinchinbrook so each day you can access a different part of the Island is desired.

A nine weight fly rod with intermediate line will cover all anglers and species in the area. But if you are like most fly fishers you have a number of rods you are welcome to bring as much of your gear as you like.
