The Earth’s largest living organism is also the Earth’s best and most diverse fishing structure. And tropical Australia is the perfect destination for your reef fishing adventure. When a customer, Ben was asked what he caught on his reef fishing adventure, he replied, “It would be easier to go through the list of what we did not catch”. From Exmouth in Western Australia, over the top of the Northern Territory, across to Rockhampton in Queensland, tropical Australia has the best reef fishing on earth, full stop!!
The reefs of tropical Australia just scream fishing, and they will have your reel screaming as well, as a tropical reef inhabitant peels line off your reel. There is something very special about heading out to the reef at speed for your days reef fishing trip, as all thoughts of anything else in the world disappear and are replaced by the smell of the sea. That sea breeze just clears your mind of all its worries. The only thought now is of the fishing ahead on this day.
The reefs of tropical Australia have every conceivable fishing option. You can fish the bottom with bait for Coral Trout and Spangled Emperor, which will undoubtedly test you strength and reflexes. Or if you're into soft plastic fishing, you can jig for Trout, Emperor and Green Jobfish. How about drifting some baits through deeper water with a bit of rubble on the bottom for Red Emperor and Large and Small Mouth Nannygai? This is also great fun with soft plastics and often you will catch Fingermark and reef dwelling Mangrove Jacks.
If tropical Australia is a fisherman’s paradise, then the reef systems off its coasts are a fly fisherman’s dream. The reef systems in tropical Australia attract huge numbers of fish, from schools of Fusiliers all the way through to BBM’s - Big Black Marlin. The huge diversity of species provides the fly fisherman many opportunities to learn and hone their skill.
For the novice, reef fishing provides the opportunity to develop your skills in an exciting fish filled environment. Whereas for the more experienced fly fisherman, it’s a great opportunity to test your skill and equipment against some of the hardest fighting fish on earth. And that’s before you even start on the bottom fish living in and around the reefs!! Make sure you have backing on your reels.
Just imagine drifting up to a school of Mackerel and Tuna in a feeding frenzy; the ocean is awash with large Tuna smashing bait in every spot that you see. You have your rod in hand with a small metal lure attached at the ready. Once in casting distance you fire out a cast and let the lure sink for a few seconds and then you start winding like hell. You know any second now you are going to be in a fishing duel with one of these ravenous fish. If this is the kind of adrenaline fuelled fishing that floats your boat, then fishing the reefs of tropical Australia is a must on your fishing list.

Weipa - April 07
Barramundi were on the bite as the weather began to clear, from another northern wet season. Eating to replenished spent energy used while in the breeding mode. Tuna moved in the Bay, hunting down the vast bait schools that feed on the nutrients that are flushed out the local river systems this time of the year. view
Daintree River - Nov 07
A few trips offshore in the last week of September were thoroughly exciting. I had few opportunities for photos on some trips as spanish mackeral, hungry trout, of all different colouring, nannygai, trevally, and GT’s kept me flat out. All fish kept definitely had roe in them. view
Daintree River - Oct 07
In September, when it calmed right off, it coincided with neap tides. Therefore the water visibility increased greatly, causing the fish to become fussy. Offshore I saw a quite of lot of spanish mackeral follow, then veer away from the bait and boat when close. I then had the only choice of changing fishing style, targeting the deeper reef species, which paid off more often than not. view
Daintree River - Sep 07
The salt water has well and truly passed the ferry crossing in the Daintree River, bringing with it golden trevally, grunter and queenfish, so fishing off the Public Wharf is once again worth while for the land based fisho, particularly with a run in tide on dusk. view
Daintree River - Aug 07
Thank goodness for the break in the south easterlies early in the month. To have the opportunity to get offshore and target spanish mackerel satisfied my itchy feet, and made many of my clients more than happy. view
