Stay calm almost there...
This is where the big fish play. Australia’s offshore game fishing grounds offer some of the best Blue and the best Black Marlin fishing on Earth. Coupled with that are large numbers of Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Spanish Mackerel and Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) to keep you busy between Marlin hook ups. Australia is the perfect place for your game fishing adventure.
Game fishing is not one of those sports filled with manic action every second of the day and night. That means when you don’t have a fish on the line causing mayhem, you have time to take in the environment and do some fishing meditation - that’s sitting back with a beer in hand, waiting for that moment when all hell breaks loose.
In that single instant when the captain yells out ‘Marlin! Marlin!’ you go from that meditative state of fishing fantasy to the pure adrenaline rush that is big game fishing. Then the line snaps off the clip from the outrigger and the reel starts to scream as line peels off. Your instinct is to grab the rod and begin your quest to hook the fish of a lifetime. Of course, those of you who have been in this situation before know better than that and wait for the captain’s instruction to hook the fish.
Even though it feels like an eternity as you wait to grab a hold of that rod that is screaming under the strain, in only a few seconds, the call is given and the rod is in your hands. You know it’s possibly a Marlin as the skipper has called it. But how big is she? These thoughts are pushed aside as the skipper gives you direction on hooking the Marlin. Then the order comes and you heave back in the rod, setting the hooks. Then 200 meters port side, your enormous Marlin erupts from the sea like a missile launched from a submarine.
This incredible scenario, where a 1000 lbs Marlin takes the bait and fights for hours, occurs more often in North Queensland than in the rest of the world combined. Yep, Cairns really is the Marlin fishing capital of the world. And just to keep you occupied between the 1000 lbs hook ups, there are Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel and Mahi Mahi, all willing to take a lure. And folks, that’s just the start of the game fishing action in Northern Australia.
As Australia has the some of the best game fishing in the world, it’s natural to expect that it plays host to many world class game fishing tournaments. And it does! It ranges from Australia’s only bluewater ladies game fishing tournament, Ribbons, to the Black Marlin Lizard Island Classic. There’s even something for the kids, with the Cairns Bluewater Junior Game Fishing Tournament. So if you fancy your chances in some of the most exciting fishing tournaments around, then head up to northern Australia for the start of the Marlin season in September, and prepare for some serious game fishing action.
But, don’t think that game fishing is only for those serious angling enthusiasts who know everything there is to know about how to hook a 1000 lbs Marlin. The advantage of having such amazing game fishing grounds is that there is something to suit every style, skill and budget. There’s everything from world-class game boats that you can hire exclusively for you and your friends, to mother ship serviced six star live aboard luxury.

We were planning to go east this trip for the first trip of the 07 summer and we were all looking forward to it. Monitoring the weather closely it was looking progressively worse and uncertain for the 100 mile open ocean trip. view

If you were fortunate enough to catch the calm weather before the November reef fin closure, all species were there to be hooked. view

It’s been a slow season for Black Marlin off Cairns…why? Who knows…but the Spaniards have been around in unusually good numbers. view

Over the past week the Aplins Weir has been producing a number of Jacks, along with Barramundi. Anglers using soft plastics and hard bodied lures have had the greatest results. The Black and Gleesons weirs have also been producing Jacks and Barra. view
