Coral Sea Game Fishing Charter

Renowned as the Black Marlin fishing capital of the world, the 150 mile stretch of the Great Barrier Reef, between Cairns and Lizard Island, boasts some of the largest Giant Black Marlin on earth. In fact seventy percent of Marlin over 1000lbs are caught in this region, meaning you have a better chance of catching a grander Marlin here than anywhere else in the world!

September to December is when the Marlin migrate to this stunning region. Generally, the fishing is better to the north, near Lizard Island early in the season, with the main bite migrating south towards Cairns as the season progresses.

Your incredible Marlin fishing charter begins from either Cooktown or Cairns, depending on your preference, and will take you to reefs of legendary status, such as Ribbons Reef, Linden Bank, Opal Reef and Onyx Reef in search of the infamous granders.

Heavy tackle Marlin fishing is a fine balance of early morning relaxation and a physically-challenging afternoon. Most large Black Marlin are on the bite in the afternoon but there are plenty of great activities for the morning, including swimming and snorkelling around the beautiful coral gardens after enjoying a breathtaking sunrise or a well deserved sleep-in, followed by a casual brunch.

In the afternoon the fishing activities begin with some light tackle fishing to catch fresh bait, before heading out to the edge of the continental shelf where 130lb outfits are dropped into the water and the hunt for the magnificent Giant Black Marlin begins.

Imagine the thrill of that spectacular strike and the fight of your life to pull in that magical 1,000 pounder! And then pleasure that evening of retelling the story over a cold beer at dinner with your fellow fisho's, as you watch the sunset over the cobalt blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef!

Although most anglers have their sights firmly focused on the ultimate hook up between September and December, there are plenty of other species that are enormous fun on medium to light tackle too, including large numbers of Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel and Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi). These fish provide great action all year round and many are great eating too!

The winter months (May to September) are best for targeting Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish and juvenile Black Marlin, up to 100lbs. Whilst the warmer months (October to March) provide great fishing for Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish and Black Marlin, up to 250lbs.
