Cape York Mothership Charter

Wild, untamed and largely inaccessible, Cape York is inhabited by wild boar, crocodiles, an abundance of birdlife and of course a huge and diverse variety of sportsfish. On this live aboard mothership charter you'll experience the best fishing that Western Cape York has to offer, from rivers seldom visited, creeks untouched by human hand and snags that have never seen a lure or fly and which are chocked full of Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks.

Your fishing adventure begins with a short 90 minute flight from Cairns to Aurukun. This scenic trip will provide spectacular views over the world heritage rainforest of Cape York, and out to the magnificent reef system that comprises the Great Barrier Reef.

Upon arrival in Aurukun, you'll be transferred to your floating home for the week and within one hour of touching down you'll be on your way to the mouth of the Archer River, where you'll meet your guide and head out on your first fishing adventure, targeting Barramundi, Jacks, Queenfish and Trevally.

Your first night on the mothership will be an experience you'll never forget. The food is incredible, with plentiful Mud Crabs, whole baked Mangrove Jacks and delicious Barramundi fillets. Looking out over a perfect sunset with a glass of wine or a cold beer is the perfect end to your first day of fishing, and is just the start of a love affair with fishing in Northern Tropical Australia.

As the sun rises the next morning, feel free to get up and out early to toss a few poppers off the back of the boat. Or make yourself a cup of coffee and sit and watch the sun rise over the Cape York Peninsula. You'll then enjoy a full breakfast, which you'll certainly need ahead of a full on day of fishing!

You and your guide can discuss the areas and types of fishing you want to do and the types of fish you'd like to catch over brekkie. During these five days you'll be fishing the Archer River area which is as vast as it is varied.

There are a number of rivers that empty into Archer Bay, including the Archer, Watson, and Ward rivers and you'll also have the opportunity to make your way well up the Archer River where you can cast for the beautiful, prehistoric Saratoga.

Just eight miles south of your location is the Love River, which opens up into a huge salt water lake area inside the mouth of the river. This offers superb estuary fishing for not only Barramundi and Mangrove Jack but also for Threadfin Salmon, Trevally, Finger Mark and lure and fly crunching Cod. And if you're looking for a challenge on fly, the Milk Fish is found in numbers in this area too.

To the north you'll find beaches as far as the eye can see, abundant with Trevally, Queenfish, Barramundi and Permit. Off the beaches you'll find all the pelagic action you can handle, including Tuna, Spanish Mackerel and house sized Trevally along with Queenfish, which are spectacular in their aerial displays when caught.

The locations and fishing times are dependent on the tides. Your guide will discuss this with you and make sure you are not fishing for fishing's sake. A day's fishing usually ends with the light of the day, but again this will depend on whether the fish are biting. If there is a prime tide around dark you WILL get to fish.

The mothership, Pikkuw, is fully air-conditioned and sleeps up to six anglers in twin share cabins. The large covered outdoor BBQ area on the top deck is a superb location to relax over a few cold beers before a freshly prepared dinner, whilst recounting the stories of the day and watching the sun set on another perfect day in the tropics.

A variety of smaller skiffs are used to get you up close and personal to your target species, and limiting two anglers to one guide on each boat ensures you get plenty of one to one time with your guide. The Hyperspace guides have over 20 years of experience in this area, and are always more than happy to provide guidance on tackle and technique, so make the most of their expertise.

The Cape York Mothership Charter is a five day minimum trip and runs from March through to December. The charter can be booked on a per person basis, or as a private charter for up to six people. All meals, accommodation and refreshments are included.

Price:

  • Seven days - $5450 per person shared (minimum 4 & maximum 6)
  • Seven days - Full private charter $32,700 max 6 persons
