Stunning sunset viewsBullo River Station
Bullo River Station is in the northwestern corner of the Northern Territory, near the Western Australian border. Encircled by the coffee coloured waters of the Victoria River, this vast working cattle station is spread over half a million acres of stunning scrub and mountain range, and is home to wallabies, dingoes, wild buffalo, myriad bird life, crocodiles and a diverse range of sports fishing too.
The fishing at Bullo River Station is fantastic, with access to one of Australia's largest and most remote rivers - the Victoria River. Here you'll hunt for Salmon, Mangrove Jacks, and Barramundi in an environment has barely been touched by man, let alone recreational anglers. And of course, there is Bullo River itself, providing access to 50 miles of beautiful winding waterways including one of the most productive big Barramundi spots in the Northern Territory, located where the Bullo and Victoria Rivers meet.
The fishing options here are diverse and can all be arranged prior to your arrival. Guided trips along with rivers and estuaries chasing the big Barramundi of the North are a fantastic way of exploring this region, but if you're feeling really adventurous, why not charter the resident station helicopter and let your guide show you fishing hotspots that few anglers could even dream of.
Just imaging flying over the rugged, red landscape of this remote land, in search of the fishing hotspots that are inaccessible by any other means. The journey itself almost as amazing as the fishing spots you'll encounter - this really is an adventure you will remember for the rest of your life.
The beauty of this Bullo River Station fishing adventure, aside from being in the most stunning outback environment you'll find, is that you can choose to do as much or as little fishing as you want. There are a multitude of activities to enjoy in between fishing, should you or your friends and family choose.
Marlee and Franz Ranacher have owned and operated Bullo River Station for many years, and encourage guests to join in any aspect of station life, including mustering cattle on horseback, swimming in rock pools at the top of sandstone escarpments and visiting the ancient aboriginal rock paintings.
Bull catching, or more accurately 'bulldozing', is another unique bush experience that involves the relatively simple but effective method of catching wild bulls with the aid of a specially fitted vehicle, which literally knocks them off their feet! Few are injured and as Marlee points out, "this may look rough, but you've got to remember that the Toyota doesn't weigh much more than the bull, so it's a pretty even contest!"
As well as the station's stock horses, which are the backbone of Bullo's cattle operations, there are also horses available for guests to ride, subject to your riding experience and ability. For experienced horse riders a day exploring the red lands of Bullo River Station allows you to see, hear and smell the beauty of the outback, stopping at the river or a nearby watering hole for a picnic provided by the station.
Those guests with a real passion for exciting horseback riding can participate in a cattle muster in the winter months of May to October. Here you'll be a part of one of the most traditional and authentic outback experiences around. And even if you're not game to participate, just watching the muster or assisting with the handling of stock can be an exciting experience like no other.
Situated in the midst of the Aussie outback, you could be forgiven for thinking that the accommodation may be a little rough and ready. But this is not the case at all. The Homestead and adjoining guest accommodation provides a very comfortable retreat from the adventures of the day. The twelve double/twin rooms are located just a few metres from the main house and are air conditioned with en-suite and sliding door access to the lawns surrounding the homestead. And of course, you are also welcome to enjoy full access to the vast living areas of the Homestead and use of the swimming pool.
Dinner is a friendly affair with everyone catching up together about the events of the day, while enjoying freshly caught Barramundi or free-range, grass fed, prime beef and few glasses of wine. After dinner, relax and gaze up at the most incredible star filled sky and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the true Australian outback.
There is no minimum stay at Bullo River Station, but a five day minimum stay is highly recommended to ensure you get the most from your trip. Bullo River Station is open to guests from March until late November.
